Colorado State (8-0) at Colorado (5-2)
GAME NOTES: A Rocky Mountain rumble is set to take place Wednesday as the Colorado Buffaloes host the undefeated Colorado State Rams at the Coors Events Center.
The Rams, owners of the best record in the Mountain West Conference, have yet to be defeated through eight games. The team was most recently in action on Sunday as it claimed a 66-58 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears at home. At this point, CSU has a 5-0 mark at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, but this will be the team's first true road game of the 2014-15 campaign.
Meanwhile the Buffaloes have also gone undefeated at home through five games. However, Colorado is coming off a loss at Georgia over the weekend, 64-57, snapping what had been a three-game win streak for the Buffs.
In a relationship that dates back more than a century, the Buffaloes lead the all-time series with Colorado State by a count of 85-37. The Rams have won only once in the last 17 trips to Boulder.
Against Northern Colorado on Sunday, the Rams had their hands full as the visitors hung around a bit too long, although the hosts still managed to come away with the win at Moby Arena to continue the team's record start to open a campaign. Stanton Kidd scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds as he made good on all but one of his eight field goal tries, followed by Gian Clavell and J.J. Avila with 12 points apiece, the latter clearing a game-high 10 rebounds in order to offset his six turnovers. Tiel Daniels also made an impact in the paint with his 11 points and nine boards.
The Rams made it back into the win column for the eighth time in as many outings, but there were still issues in the meeting with UNC, specifically when it came to turnovers (16), 3-point shooting (4-of-15) and accuracy at the free-throw line (14-of-30).
Efforts at the charity stripe have to be a concern for CSU given how often the team is sent to the line. Through eight games the team is averaging close to 26 free-throw attempts, far more than the approximately 19 tries for the competition, and if the Rams continue to shoot only 67.1 percent in those situations they will be missing out on a considerable number of points.
Avila, who is averaging 14.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per contest, has been getting to the line on a regular basis, but his 57.4 percent accuracy makes him a liability late in close games. On the other hand, Kidd (14.4 ppg) picks up some of the slack in that area with 85.2 percent shooting.
The Buffaloes had trouble finding the basket against Georgia on the road, converting only 35.6 percent from the floor, as well as a mere 2-of-17 (.118) behind the 3-point line, keeping the team from making a real run at the Bulldogs. Josh Scott managed to register a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Askia Booker tallied a game-high 20 points and Xavier Johnson dropped in 10 points in the setback.
Scott, who has scored in double figures in all but one game thus far, is responsible for 16.6 ppg to pace the Buffaloes. He has made good on an impressive 61.7 percent from the floor and also 89.1 percent at the free-throw line. Scott is also pulling down 8.6 rpg and has a team-best 14 blocked shots. Booker adds another 12.6 ppg and a team-best 20 assists, but it is still hard to get past the fact that he has shot only 37.5 percent from the floor.
Georgia gave the Rams the blueprint for how to take down the Buffaloes and as long as the visitors put forth the effort on the glass the outcome should be favorable for undefeated Colorado State.
