Air Force (3-1) at Colorado (2-1)
GAME NOTES: Colorado kicks off a three-game homestand at the Coors Events Center on Tuesday, as the Buffaloes host the Air Force Falcons for a non- conference bout.
The Buffaloes, who will host Lipscomb and San Francisco over the next eight days, kicked off 2014-15 with back-to-back victories over Drexel and Auburn before suffering their first setback on Saturday, a 56-33 defeat at the hands of Wyoming on the road.
The scoring output for the Buffs was the lowest since the Truman administration according to Colorado sources.
Meanwhile, the Falcons have bounced back from their season-opening loss to Army by winning three in a row, albeit against some questionable competition. The most recent triumph came on Saturday versus Western State by a score of 90-60, boosting the team's stats quite a bit in the process.
The Buffs lead the series by a commanding 20-3 margin, with the last victory for the Academy coming in Boulder back on Nov. 18, 2006 by a score of 84-46.
Against Western State a few days back, Air Force relied on Kamryn Williams as the starting forward went on to score a game-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Also scoring in double figures for the Falcons was Max Yon with 11 points in limited action as the team put a staggering 17 players on the floor.
Perhaps the most remarkable stat for the Falcons in the contest, outside of shooting a sizzling 67.4 percent from the field and 15-of-21 behind the 3- point line, was that there was an assist on all but one of their 31 made field goals.
Through four games Yon is the leading scorer with his 17.5 ppg, shooting not just 58.7 percent from the floor, but an incredible 12-of-23 (.522) behind the 3-point line as well. As a group, Air Force has knocked down an incredible 50.6 percent on the perimeter and 56.6 percent from the floor, spreading the wealth so that plenty of players see actual game time.
Colorado, which had been receiving votes for the national rankings, kept up with the Cowboys in the first half of their meeting over the weekend, but that was before the Buffaloes suffered an epic collapse after the break. The team made a total of just two field goals on 20 attempts, finishing with a mere nine points in the period. Needless to say, there wasn't a single Colorado player in double figures, with Xavier Johnson coming the closest with nine points on 3-of-10 from the floor.
Following a very humbling outing, Colorado is now scoring just 62.7 ppg, although that is still much better than the 54.3 ppg that the program is allowing. Josh Scott, a 62.5 percent shooter from the floor, is responsible for both 14.7 ppg and 9.0 rpg to pace the program in both department and helping the Buffs to an 8.0 rpg advantage over the competition.
You have to assume that the Buffaloes will be itching to get back on the floor and prove their second-half effort versus Wyoming was a mere fluke. However, if the Air Force defense digs in, the results, while not so lopsided, should still go against Colorado.
