Georgia State (1-2) vs. Chicago State (2-2)
GAME NOTES: Playing three games in as many days, the Georgia State Panthers and the Chicago State Cougars tangle in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic on Monday afternoon.
The Panthers opened the season with a massive 115-55 victory over Tennessee Temple, but were quickly brought back to reality with back-to-back defeats versus opponents from Division I. The squad stumbled against 14th-ranked Iowa State (81-58) a week ago, and then on Friday was bounced by Colorado State in Fort Collins, 80-70.
As for the Cougars, they began the campaign with back-to-back defeats versus Arizona State and Creighton, both by at least 18 points, but have since responded with consecutive victories to balance the scales. The first win was a resounding 102-51 decision versus IU-Northwest, the latest a 75-52 victory against Trinity Christian, both at home.
This game represents the first-ever meeting between these two schools on the basketball court.
Against Colorado State, the Panthers made good on 49.1 percent of their field goal attempts, but the big difference in the meeting took place at the free- throw line where the squad was outscored by a 21-8 margin, more than enough to send GSU to the 10-point road loss.
Ryan Harrow scored a game-high 26 points and handed out five assists for Georgia State, followed by fellow guard R.J. Hunter with 19 points, to go along with seven rebounds and five steals. But even with Hunter's effort on the glass, GSU was still topped in the rebounding department by a 41-32 margin.
Harrow may have been the leading scorer in two of the first three games, but his 21.0 ppg actually trails Hunter (21.3 ppg) heading into action this week. Both players are shooting just over 43 percent from the floor as they account for more than half of the unit's 81.0 ppg. while reserve T.J. Snipes (7.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg) is hitting his field goals at a 68.8 percent clip.
Against the Trinity Christian Trolls, a group that operates at the NAIA level, Chicago State had 15 players see time on the floor, with Clarke Rosenberg posting a team-best 18 points to pace four players in double figures. Trayvon Palmer finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, followed by Jawad Adekoya and Jared Dimakos with 10 points apiece, although the latter was also charged with six of the unit's 13 turnovers.
For the Cougars, there is Rosenberg and then there is everyone else when it comes to supplying offense. Rosenberg has led the team in scoring in all four games and is now putting up 20.5 ppg on the strength of 52.5 percent shooting from the field. His closest teammate is Anthony Glover, a reserve who has converted 8-of-19 tries from beyond the arc just like Rosenberg, but is currently putting up just 8.0 ppg for a team producing 73.2 ppg.
Chicago State may be able to beat up on some of the smaller schools on its schedule, but the Panthers are a different story, even if GSU is not a dominant program.
