Old Dominion (11-1) at Charlotte (6-6)
GAME NOTES: Still trying to pad their resume and make a push to break into the nation's Top-25, the Old Dominion Monarchs will travel to face the Charlotte 49ers in a Conference USA clash at Halton Arena Sunday.
Old Dominion has won eight consecutive contests dating back to November, and owns an 11-1 record on the season. The Monarchs took down Mount St. Mary's, 69-35, in their last outing on Monday.
Charlotte enters this conference clash with a 6-6 record on the season, but the team has lost its last two games. The 49ers dropped back-to-back contests to Georgetown (81-78) and Georgia Tech (67-66).
Old Dominion owns a slim 15-13 all-time series lead over Charlotte, although the 49ers came away with the win in Charlotte last season, 74-63. In fact, the last time ODU won in Charlotte was back in the 2008-09 season, 69-68.
Old Dominion proved to be simply way too much for Mount St. Mary's to handle. The Monarchs went into halftime with a commanding 42-19 lead, which the team only built on in the second frame. ODU limited Mount St. Mary's to just 22 percent shooting from the floor in the contest, which included a 3-of-23 mark from 3-point distance. Javonte Douglas netted 16 points to lead ODU in the win, adding in nine rebounds. Richard Ross scored 14 points, and Trey Freeman added 12 in the lopsided win.
The Monarchs have prided themselves on a strong scoring defense this season, as they enter this matchup with Charlotte holding opponents to 55.2 ppg on 38.4 percent shooting from the floor. Old Dominion is getting just one double- digit scoring effort per game this season on average, which is held by Freeman and his 16.6 ppg mark. Aaron Bacote chips in 9.5 ppg, checking in at second on the roster in scoring. Even without star scorer Dmitri Batten, who transferred out after last season, the Monarchs are still scoring 66.8 ppg. .
With three seconds left to play in Tuesday's clash against Georgia Tech, Marcus Georges-Hunt connected on a jumper to give the Yellow Jackets a 67-66 victory over Charlotte, sinking the 49ers in their second straight contest. Charlotte shot 45.8 percent from the floor in the loss, and missed on all but one of the team's 13 3-point tries. Pierria Henry tallied 14 points to lead the team, while Terrence Williams chipped in 13, Torin Dorn added 12 and Willie Clayton contributed 10 points in the losing effort.
The 49ers have been strong offensively, averaging 75.6 ppg this season, but haven't carried over that effort to the defensive end, where Charlotte allows 75.4 ppg to opponents. Braxton Ogbueze leads Charlotte in scoring this season at 12.3 ppg, followed by Dorn's 11.3 ppg mark. Henry adds in 11.0 ppg with a team-best 68 assists this season, while Mike Thorne Jr. chips in 10.3 ppg with a team-high 7.7 rpg.
Old Dominion hasn't been very productive traveling to Charlotte in recent years, but the Monarchs have been performing at an extremely high level lately. The team knows that by the time the new polls come out early next week, there's a chance the Monarchs will be among the select group.
