CHARLESTON COUGARS

Charleston Cougars

Charleston Cougars VS. Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M (1-1) vs. College of Charleston (1-2)

GAME NOTES: In the second round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, the Texas A&M Aggies take on the College of Charleston Cougars.

A last-second tip-in from Dayton's Devon Scott sank the Aggies in the opening round of the tournament. The loss came in just the second game of the season for Texas A&M, which crushed Northwestern State, 109-68, in its season opener.

Charleston put up a fight against defending national champion Connecticut in the first round, but succumbed in a 65-57 decision. The loss was the second straight for the Cougars, who lost by a score of 80-67 against Gardner-Webb in its previous outing.

The winner of this contest will face the victor between George Mason and New Mexico on Sunday, with the loser of each matchup squaring off as well.

This bout marks the first time these two programs have gone head-to-head on the hardwood.

In a game that featured seven ties and nine lead changes, Dayton had the last laugh against Texas A&M. The Aggies led by as many as eight points and never fell behind by more than six, despite shooting just 35.8 percent from the floor. They limited the Flyers to 34.6 percent shooting, but hurt themselves with turnovers, losing the ball 21 times.

Jalen Jones regressed offensively in the losing effort, as he had only eight points a game after scoring 16. He still did fine work on the glass, collecting seven rebounds to give him 12 for the season. Kourtney Roberson was even more impressive in that department, ripping down a game-high 15 rebounds to help the Aggies to a 47-26 edge on the boards. In addition, he scored 12 points, while Alex Caruso netted 17 to go with five assists and, unfortunately, as many turnovers. Roberson (11 ppg, 9.5 rpg) Antwan Space (10 ppg, 7.5 rpg) should continue to be solid in the middle, while Caruso (9.5 ppg, 13 assists) directs traffic.

Despite four players scoring in double figures, Charleston just didn't have enough in the tank to get past the Huskies. The Cougars started slow, with only seven field goals in the opening half, but they did improve to 52 percent shooting in the second. However, that corresponded with a 63.2 percent shooting effort by the Huskies. Anthony Stitt netted 17 points, but turned the ball over seven times as well, while Adjehi Baru tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Stitt has gotten off to a strong start to the season, averaging an even 16 points per game on 56.3 percent shooting in the first three contests. Baru (12.7 ppg, 10 rpg) has made quite an impact on the frontlines himself, connecting on nearly 70 percent of his field goal tries, while leading the team in rebounds. Joe Chealey (11.3 ppg) is averaging in double figures as well, but he is only shooting at a 37 percent clip. Donovan Gilmore (8 pg, 7 rpg) is a solid scorer and rebounder off the bench.

The Cougars should be proud of the effort they put forth against UConn. However, moral victories don't amount to much and it won't help them against a solid Texas A&M squad.
