Tulsa (7-5) at UCF (7-4)
GAME NOTES: With each team looking to extend a two-game win streak, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and UCF Knights will clash head-to-head in an American Athletic Conference battle at CFE Arena.
Tulsa is fresh off a four-game homestand, where the Golden Hurricane went 2-2 during the stretch. Tulsa enters this clash sporting a 7-5 overall record, and will be making its American Athletic Conference debut against the Knights.
The same came be said about UCF, which has yet to play an AAC team this season. But the Knights will be looking for a win regardless after taking two straight matchups against Detroit (75-70) and Southeastern Louisiana (70-65). The Knights are 7-2 this season at CFE Arena.
This meeting will be the 15th in the all-time series between Tulsa and UCF. The Golden Hurricane own an 8-6 advantage in the series over the Knights, although UCF has won two of the last three and is 6-1 when playing against Tulsa in Orlando.
Last Monday, Tulsa cruised to a 76-47 win over Incarnate Word, which lost for just the second time all season long. The Golden Hurricane dominated the Cardinals defensively, as UIW shot just 29.1 percent from the floor, including 4-of-22 from 3-point range. Shaquille Harrison led the way for Tulsa in the win, as the guard netted 24 points in the team's 76-point effort. James Woodard chipped in with 12 points, and Marquel Curtis added 11 points and six rebounds for the home squad. D'Andre Wright contributed a team-high 10 rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
The Golden Hurricane exceeded their own offensive expectations with the 76- point effort. This season, Tulsa is averaging 66.8 ppg, led primarily by the efforts of Woodard (14.8 ppg) and Harrison (14.3 ppg), who are the only two Tulsa players averaging double digits. The Golden Hurricane have been pretty steady on the defensive end, however, as they are keeping opponents to just 63.5 ppg on 39.9 percent shooting from the field. Rashad Smith owns a team- best 6.3 rpg mark, and Harrison tops the squad with 3.8 apg.
UCF has won back-to-back games by five points each, so the Knights would like to have a bit more control of the tempo in this home clash with a strong Tulsa team. UCF took down Southeastern Louisiana in its last outing thanks to 10- of-23 shooting from 3-point range and a 41.5 percentage from the floor in general. Freshman B.J. Taylor netted 15 points to lead the way for the home squad, while Adonys Henriquez and Brandon Goodwin each chipped in with 13 points. Daiquan Walker added 11 points and seven assists in the victory.
Taylor, a true freshman, has been a revelation for the Knights, who certainly need his team-leading 14.2 ppg average. Henriquez is the only other player for UCF to average a double-digit point total, checking in at 11.3 ppg for a Knights squad averaging 67.3 ppg. But UCF's scoring defense hasn't been up to par. The Knights enter this game allowing 69.1 ppg to opponents, so UCF needs all the help it can get on the offensive end. Shasheed Davis leads the team in rebounding, bringing down just 4.2 boards per outing.
Both teams are about even in terms of scoring, but the Golden Hurricane have proven to be the better team this season defensively. Tulsa has a tough trip to make to take on the Knights in Orlando, but as long as Harrison and Woodard show up offensively, the visitors should be just fine.
