Cent. Connecticut St. Blue Devils VS. Bethune-Cookman Wildcats

Bethune-Cookman (1-3) vs. Central Connecticut State (0-4)

GAME NOTES: The Central Connecticut State Blue Devils will once again take aim at their first win of the season when they clash with the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats as part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Multipurpose Activity Center.

BCU has fared only slightly better than CCSU this season, with one win in three tries. However, since topping Trinity College, 91-69, in the season opener they have lost three straight, including a 63-42 setback against Towson on Tuesday. Tennessee-Martin is the next foe on the schedule.

CCSU has faced four foes and taken as many losses, including a 65-50 setback against event host Monmouth on Saturday. The Blue Devils being a three-game road trip next against East Carolina.

This is the first-ever meeting between these two programs.

Finding ways to score was a tough task for BCU against Towson. The Wildcats only made 31.9 percent of their shots from the floor, including a 4-of-16 effort from 3-point range. They didn't do much better at the charity stripe, making only 8-of-17 tries. That proved to be costly, as the Tigers had 28 points at the free-throw line. BCU also was hurt by a 42-25 deficit on the glass.

As far as individual performances go, Mile Trapp was the most effective scorer for the Wildcats on Saturday, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including a 3-of-6 effort from 3-point range. Quentin Brewer tallied 11 points and eight rebounds before fouling out, and Clemmye OWens netted nine points, but on just 3-of-10 shooting off the bench.

CCSU appeared to be equally perplexed on offense in its outing on Saturday. The Blue Devils finished with only 18 field goals on 39.1 percent shooting, while making only 4-of-14 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. At the very least, they were more effective at the free-throw line (10-of-13) and on the boards, earning 32 rebounds to Monmouth's 31.

Matt Mobley, the teams leading scorer through four games at 19.8 points per contest, was one of the players most effected by the shooting slump. He did end up with 11 points, but on just 3-of-11 shooting, including a 1-of-6 showing from 3-point range. Khalen Cumberland took up the mantle of scoring leader, netting 15 points, but he negated the positives with seven turnovers. Cumberlander (12.2 ppg) is the only other player on the roster averaging in double figures. Faronte Drakeford (8.2 ppg), who had 12 points against Monmouth, is the third best scorer and only other averaging more than five points per game.

Both of these teams should find a bit more success offensively on Sunday. Although they still have a long way to go, if Mobley returns to form, the Blue Devils may begin to salvage the season.
