Cal Poly (2-1) at California (3-1)
GAME NOTES: In a matchup of teams from the Golden State, the California Golden Bears play host to the Cal Poly Mustangs in non-conference action at Haas Pavilion.
Since losing to Nevada, 65-49, in the season opener, Cal Poly has picked up two victories, both at home. The Mustangs got the short burst going with a 65-44 rout of San Francisco State before pulling away for a 78-60 triumph against Delaware. They will remain on the road for their next game at Saint Mary's.
California is still licking its wounds from a 71-55 loss to seventh-ranked Texas in the 2K Sports Classic championship last Friday. The loss ended a 3-0 start for the Golden Bears, which included a 73-59 win over Syracuse. Up next, the Golden Bears will go on the road, although they will remain in California, as they face Fresno State.
The Golden Bears secured a 51-41 victory over the Mustangs when they last met in 2010. That win improved Cal to 2-1 in the all-time series and made up for a 63-62 setback against the Mustangs back in 2003.
Despite shooting just under 40 percent from the floor against Delaware, Cal Poly still posted an easy win. The Mustangs nailed 12 3-pointers in the 18- point victory, while holding the visiting Blue Hens to just 31.4 percent shooting. Ridge Shipley paved the way for the Mustangs, finishing with 21 points, while draining five shots from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs may very well need to continue to be dominant on defense if they can't pick up the pace offensively. They are scoring only 64 points per game on 38.2 percent shooting, but couple that with defensive efforts which have yielded 56.3 points and 34.4 percent shooting to opponents. Shipley (12 ppg) is the top scorer among four players averaging in double figures. Brian Bennett (11.3 ppg, 6 rpg), David Nwaba (11.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and Reese Morgan (10 ppg, 5.3 rpg) are the other primary scoring options.
California was battered from the free-throw line by Texas, as the Longhorns drilled 30-of-37 shots to make up for a rather poor showing from the field overall (.388). The Golden Bears only made 12-of-22 free-throw attempts themselves, while shooting a dismal 31.3 percent from the field overall. David Kravish had 19 points and five rebounds, while Tyrone Wallace (16 points, eight rebounds) was a top producer as well. However, the duo combined to go 13-of-35 from the field.
The offensive showing was a large step back for Cal, which is still averaging 78 points per game on 47.4 percent shooting. Defensively, the Golden Bears are allowing 61.5 points per game on a 35.2 percent success rate. Jordan Mathews (17 ppg) is one of four players averaging in double figures, with Wallace (16 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 5.2 apg) putting up big numbers across the board. Kravish (12.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Jabari Bird (12 ppg) are important contributors as well.
Losing to a top-10 team isn't anything to be ashamed of and Cal clearly has the ability to beat strong teams, as it proved against Syracuse. Cal Poly may be riding a short winning streak, but it will end here.
