CAL. ST.-FULLERTON TITANS

Cal. St.-Fullerton Titans

Cal. St.-Fullerton Titans VS. San Jose St. Spartans

San Jose State (1-2) at Cal State Fullerton (0-2)

GAME NOTES: The San Jose State Spartans hit the road for the first time this season, as they drop in on the Cal State Fullerton Titans for a non-conference tussle on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans, who don't actually leave the state of California until four days before Christmas, are off to a 1-2 start. The team defeated Bethesda in the season opener, but since then has bowed to Portland (73-68 in overtime) and, on Wednesday night, Pepperdine (63-44), as the offense failed to show up.

The Titans have also gotten off to a rough start versus Division I programs, losing to the likes of Santa Clara (89-72) and New Mexico (67-59) in the first three days of the season.

The Titans lead the all-time series by a narrow 26-25 margin. The last game played between the teams in Fullerton turned into a resounding 104-77 victory for the hosts back in 2006.

The Spartans trailed by only four points at the break against Pepperdine in the last outing, but that was before reality set in for an SJSU squad that made a total of just five field goals over the final 20 minutes of action. For the game, San Jose State had more turnovers (20) than field goals (15), and shot a dismal 3-of-17 behind the 3-point line.

The Spartans didn't have a single player score in double figures versus the Waves, although Rashad Muhammad and Frank Rogers came close with nine points apiece, the latter also clearing a game-high 11 rebounds.

Through three games, Rogers leads a trio of double-digit scorers with his 12.5 ppg, his 7.5 rpg the best among players who have appeared in more than a single game as well. Jordan Baker checks in with 11.0 ppg, but he too missed one contest early on. As a unit, the Spartans are producing a mere 59.7 ppg, but at least the defense is holding foes to 60.0 ppg.

Considering the Titans were going into enemy territory versus New Mexico, losing by just eight points might be seen as a moral victory in The Pit. The venue has never been kind to visitors, so at least Fullerton was able to make things interesting in the second half. Moses Morgan finished with a team-high 21 points, shooting 5-of-8 behind the 3-point line, followed by Lanerryl Johnson and Alex Harris with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Morgan, who is playing 37.5 minutes per contest, is scoring 18.5 ppg as he shoots better from beyond the arc (.444) than he is from the floor overall (.406). Johnson goes for another 16.5 ppg and Harris 12.5 ppg, although the latter is hitting only 34.8 percent from the floor and that has brought the team down to a mere 40.7 percent.

Allowing the first two opponents on the schedule to convert a sizzling 64.0 percent out on the perimeter, the Titans are making it tough on themselves to get over the hump this season, but this might be the break they were looking for.
