BYU Cougars VS. Eastern Kentucky Colonels

Eastern Kentucky (4-0) at BYU (4-2)

GAME NOTES: The Eastern Kentucky Colonels put their flawless record in harm's way on Saturday evening, as they take on the BYU Cougars in a non-conference matchup at the Marriott Center.

Jeff Neubauer's Colonels are off to a 4-0 start to the season and have shown plenty of offense along the way, with a pair of 100+ scoring efforts. The team comes off its first road game of the season and scored a season-low 73 points, but it was still good enough for a win over Southern Utah.

Dave Rose's Cougars will not shy away from a shootout with two games of 100+ points as well. BYU is 4-2 on the year and enters following a disappointing showing in the Maui Invitational, with overtime losses to San Diego State (92-87 2OT) and Purdue (87-85 OT) sandwiched around a win over host Chaminade (121-85).

BYU has won two of the previous three matchups with Eastern Kentucky, including a 90-86 shootout in the last meeting in 1990.

EKU is coming off its worst offensive showing of the season, as the Colonels managed to shoot a mere .361 from the floor against Southern Utah. The team was able to hit 10 3-pointers though and did force the Thunderbirds into 18 turnovers in the win. Corey Walden was responsible for a lot of the scoring, finishing with a game-high 33 points, as he was 10-01-17 form the floor, with five 3-pointers. Timmy Knipp was a distant second in the scoring column for EKU, with 13 points. Eric Stutz scored just four points, but he did grab a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Colonels are sporting an eye-popping +44.2 scoring margin this year thanks to a couple of blowouts. The offense has been top-notch, with EKU shooting .482 from the field, leading to 94.8 ppg. The 3-pointer is a big weapon for the Colonels, who averaging over 10 made treys per contest. Walden has been outstanding, as the 6-foot-2 senior is shooting almost 60 percent from the field (.596) and putting up 20.5 ppg. Jaylen Babb-Harrison hasn't started a game yet, but still averaging 14.3 ppg. Stutz (13.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and Ja'Mill Powell (11.0 ppg) add to the scoring deluge.

Eastern Kentucky has Walden, while BYU will counter with Tyler Haws. The 6-5 senior was one of the nation's premier scorers a year ago and is playing at an All-America level once again, pacing the team with 21.5 ppg. There is plenty of scoring depth on a team that is averaging 96.7 ppg thus far. Chase Fischer is next in the scoring column at 15.7 ppg, followed by Anson Winder and Kyle Collinsworth, who tack on 13.5 and 11.0 ppg, respectively.

Purdue was able to score the last bucket with one second remaining in overtime to propel the Boilermakers past the Cougars in a thrilling matchup in Maui. The loss spoiled a terrific performance by Haws, who erupted for a season-high 32 points. Haws, who was 9-of-19 from the floor and 13-of-14 from the free- throw line, added season-highs with five rebounds and three blocked shots as well. Winder had a strong game as well, netting 18 points.

The Cougars' only losses this season have come in overtime, so they will be eager to finish in regulation this time around. Expect an offensive slugfest in this one, with Haws leading the way to big win for BYU.
