Wright State (2-0) at Bowling Green (1-0)
GAME NOTES: Having won their first two games of the season on their home court, the Wright State Raiders will hit the road to take on the Bowling Green Falcons in a non-conference clash at Stroh Center.
The Raiders opened their season with a victory over Belmont on Friday, then followed that effort up with a 76-64 win over Ohio Dominican Sunday. Wright State, of the Horizon League, has its sights set on the conference title again this season.
Bowling Green dominated in the team's exhibition game against Notre Dame College prior to the start of the season, and then did the same thing on the road in the team's season opener against Drake. The Mid-American Conference Falcons ran to a 19-point, 77-58 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday.
This meeting will be the 14th between the two sides in their program history. Bowling Green holds a narrow lead over the Raiders, 7-6. But it was WSU that won last season at home, 46-43.
Wright State took it to Ohio Dominican several days ago behind a 25-point, seven-rebound effort from Chrishawn Hopkins, who played 39 minutes in the contest. The Raiders buried the 0-3 Ohio Dominican team with a 55.8 percent shooting clip from the floor, which included a 68 percent mark in the second half. Reggie Arceneaux, one of the returning players from last season's squad, netted 18 points in the win, while Joe Thomasson chipped in with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists. The Raiders used their size to their advantage by outscoring Ohio Dominican in the paint, 40-22, and had a 24-9 points off turnovers advantage.
Through two games, Hopkins leads Wright State with a 23.0 ppg average, adding in 6.0 rpg and a perfect 9-for-9 shooting touch from the free-throw line. Arceneaux (16.5 ppg) is second on the team in scoring, adding in a team-best six assists. Thomasson (10.5 ppg) and Michael Karena (10.0 ppg) round out the double-digit scorers on the team. Thomasson's 7.5 rpg average is a team-best through three games, while his three blocked shots is tied for the most.
It's only been one game, but so far the Chris Jans experiment as Bowling Green's new coach seems to be working just fine. Jans was an assistant at Wichita State for years, so the Falcons' athletic department is hoping he can bring some of the Wichita magic to Ohio. The Falcons are boosted this season by the return of forward Richaun Holmes (13.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg, league-best 88 blocked shots), who finds himself on the All-MAC Preseason First Team. Holmes is joined by scorers Anthony Henderson (10.4 ppg), Spencer Parker (12.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Jehvon Clarke (12.5 ppg, 4.7 apg) in the lineup.
Clarke came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points in Bowling Green's win over Drake last weekend. Chauncey Orr got the start at forward, while David Joseph and Henderson were the backcourt starters. Holmes netted 12 points with five blocked shots, while Parker and Jovan Austin each chipped in with 10 points. The Falcons turned the ball over just nine times, which is a rarity in the first game of the season and with a new coach and system in place.
The lineup is certainly there for Bowling Green, but it didn't get the Falcons far a season ago, so hopefully Jans will be able to turn things around. Wright State is playing well right now, but will face its first true test against Bowling Green on the road. If the Falcons can bury their shots, they should have the edge.
