Southeast Missouri State (2-2) at Bowling Green (2-0)
GAME NOTES: Looking to improve to 3-0 to start the 2014-15 season, the Bowling Green Falcons host the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in a non-conference battle at the Stroh Center on Tuesday evening.
Southeast Missouri State began the new season at 2-0, but lost back-to-back games in back-to-back days against Loyola Marymount and, most recently, San Diego by a 67-56 margin at the LMU Classic.
Bowling Green opened its season with a 77-58 win over Drake, then followed that victory up with another against Wright State, 70-55. The Falcons play this last game at home before embarking on a two-game road trip.
Tuesday night's clash between SEMO and Bowling Green will mark the first-ever time these two programs meet on the basketball court.
Southeast Missouri played well offensively in the team's loss to San Diego in the LMU Classic, but the Toreros simply played better. The Redhawks hit on 43.8 percent of their shots from the floor, and got double-digit scoring contributions form three different players, but they couldn't keep up with Johnny Dee's 22 points for San Diego. Aaron Adeoye led SEMO with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double, while Isiah Jones chipped in with 11 points and six boards. Antonius Cleveland contributed 10 points in the loss.
Jarekious Bradley leads Southeast Missouri State in scoring this season with a 17.5 ppg average, but the scoring threat has only played in two games this season, having missed the last two. Nino Johnson checks in behind Bradley with 14.5 ppg, and Cleveland is right there in third on the team with 12.0 ppg. Josh Langford, who has also played in only two games this season, rounds out the team's double-digit scorers with 11.5 ppg. The Redhawks are netting 70.5 points per outing through four games, and allowing opponents to score 65.0 ppg.
Bowling Green dominated Wright State defensively, holding the Raiders to just 32.7 percent shooting in the game in which Bowling Green came out on top by 15 points. Zack Denny came off the bench to net 18 points with seven rebounds in the win, while Spencer Parker chipped in with 14 points and six boards of his own. Richaun Holmes worked just short of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, as his Falcons shot 42.6 percent from the floor.
Four players lead Bowling Green in scoring this season, each netting double- digit point totals. Parker is at the top of the list with 12.0 ppg, followed by Denny's 11.5 ppg, Jehvon Clarke's 11.0 ppg and Holmes's 10.5 ppg. Holmes and Denny each lead the team with 6.0 rpg, while Holmes, who was last season's best shot blocker in the Mid-American Conference, already has 10 blocks through two contests.
Bowling Green has a deep lineup, and any number of players - starters or bench players - can lead the team in scoring. Protecting the rim will be the key for the Falcons this season, and if Holmes can remain productive, there's no reason to think the team can make a run in the MAC, and in non-conference play.
