Recap: Boston College vs. Pittsburgh
Chestnut Hill, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Newkirk scored 15 points, including the game-winning layup with 5.9 seconds left in overtime, as the Pittsburgh Panthers edged the Boston College Eagles, 61-60, in an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown at the Conte Forum.
For the Panthers (11-4, 1-1 ACC), Michael Young also finished with 15 points, while Sheldon Jeter chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Olivier Hanlan led the Eagles (7-6, 0-2) with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Aaron Brown added 11 points.
The Eagles went into halftime leading 27-22, as they shot 41.4 percent from the field, including 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. They were helped by the poor shooting of the Panthers, who made just 33.3 percent of their field goal tries, which included misses on all three of their 3-point attempts.
After intermission, Pittsburgh improved to 40.7 percent shooting from the field, but still struggled from the perimeter, going 1-of-5 from 3-point range. Boston College also struggled from the field, making just 36.4 percent of its field goal attempts, though that did included 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Trailing 53-43 with just over three minutes to play, the Panthers scored the final 10 points of regulation, including a layup by Newkirk after he stole the ball from Brown, which tied the score at 53-53 with 31.2 seconds to play in the second half. The Eagles had two close in tries in the final seconds to win the game, but came up short and the game went into overtime.
In the extra session, the Eagles held a 60-55 lead with under three minutes to play but failed to score again, setting the stage for Newkirk's heroics at the end of the game.
The Panthers finished with a 22-4 edge in second-chance points. The Eagles outscored the Panthers from beyond the arc, 18-3.
