Pittsburgh (10-4) at Boston College (7-5)
GAME NOTES: Two teams that opened conference play with losses will attempt to turn things around, as the Pittsburg Panthers take on the Boston College Eagles in an ACC showdown at the Conte Forum on Tuesday evening.
Jamie Dixon's Panthers entered ACC play with a full head of steam, bringing a six-game win streak into Raleigh on Saturday against NC State. However, Pittsburgh couldn't find its rhythm against the Wolfpack, dropping a 68-50 decision at PNC Arena. With the loss, Pitt is now 10-4 on the season.
Jim Christian's first season at the helm in Chestnut Hill has been a mixed bag thus far. The Eagles are two games over .500 at 7-5, but they have dropped two of their last three games, including an 85-62 drubbing at the hands of second- ranked Duke in Durham on Saturday.
Pittsburgh holds a 29-18 edge in the all-time series with Boston College and has won seven straight and 11 of the last 12 meetings, overall.
The Panthers fell behind NC State by seven points at the half and were unable to close the gap, as the Wolfpack shot a scorching 59.3 percent from the floor in the second half to cruise to the victory. Pittsburgh struggled offensively, connecting on just 32.7 percent from the floor, Jamel Artis led the way in defeat with 13 points. James Robinson checked in with 11 points and Michael Young just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Panthers are at their best when they can impose their will defensively on an opponent. Pittsburgh is holding foes this season to just 61.1 ppg, while owning a +5.5 rebounding margin. The team doesn't possess gaudy offensive numbers, averaging just 67.6 ppg, on .447 shooting. Young is the team's top playmaker, as the sophomore forward leads the way in both scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg). Robinson has proved to be an effective scorer (11.3 ppg) and solid distributor (4.9 apg). Artis (9.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg) provides some support.
Junior guard Olivier Hanlan netted a team-high 22 points, but it wasn't nearly enough as Boston College was severely out-manned against Duke this past weekend. The Eagles were able to close the Blue Devils' lead to 10 points in the second half, but Duke rattled off 14 straight points to put the game out of reach. Transfer Aaron Brown joined Hanlan in double figures with 11 points, but there wasn't much offensive support elsewhere.
Boston College has a potent one-two punch in Hanlan and Brown, but there is little depth beyond them. Hanlan is tops on the team in both scoring and assists, averaging 16.0 points and 4.2 assists per outing. Brown, who played his first two seasons at Temple and then transferred to BC from Southern Miss, is a close second in the scoring column at 15.7 ppg. Junior big man Dennis Clifford (7-1, 250) is the team's top option in the frontcourt, at 8.7 ppg and 5.8 rpg.
Boston College has played extremely well at home, with a 6-1 mark at the Conte Forum. Although Pittsburgh has gotten the best of this series of late, the Eagles may just find a way to get the job done here.
