Harvard (10-3) at Boston College (7-7)
GAME NOTES: Local rivals meet at Conte Forum on Wednesday night, as the Harvard Crimson visit the Boston College Eagles in non-conference action.
Harvard has won six straight meetings against Boston College since renewing the series in 2009, with five of those victories coming on the Eagles' home court. BC does however, lead the all-time series by a 32-15 margin.
Harvard went 9-3 in non-conference games before opening Ivy League action with a 57-46 victory over Dartmouth last Saturday. The conference favorites, who began their quest for a fifth straight Ivy crown, got 16 points from Corbin Miller and 11 from Kenyatta Smith. Siyani Chambers and Wesley Saunders contributed 10 points and four assists apiece.
The Crimson shot 52.2 percent in the first half against a 26.9 percent effort for Dartmouth, though they only led by seven at halftime. The margin was cut to five midway through the second half before a 9-0 Harvard run put the game away.
Saunders took somewhat of a backseat in the Crimson's 11th straight win over Dartmouth, but he still leads the team in scoring (16.2 ppg) and ranks second in rebounds (5.8 rpg). His .515 field goal percentage is a big reason why the squad is connecting on a terrific 45.5 percent of their total shots.
Miller saw his average rise to 9.5 ppg, while Steve Moundou-Missi has been a constant presence down low with 6.8 rebounds and nearly two blocks per game. The 6-foot-7 senior is also chipping in 8.0 ppg.
Boston College's start to conference play has not gone as well, as the Eagles have dropped their first three ACC tilts. The latest setback came this past Saturday against Miami-Florida in a 60-56 final. They were down by as many as 13 but managed to pull even at 50-50 down the stretch, but they never got over the hump.
Olivier Hanlan logged 19 points and Eddie Odio contributed 13 in the loss, which saw the Eagles get outscored in the paint by a 30-20 margin in their ninth straight loss to Miami.
Hanlan is netting 16.5 ppg to top the squad and has dished out a team-best 60 assists as well. Aaron Brown is the only other BC player to average in double digits, as he enters Wednesday's game netting 14.6 ppg. The Eagles come in scoring 66.9 ppg on 43.7 percent shooting from the floor. Dennis Clifford leads the way in rebounding at 5.9 boards per outing, adding in a team-best 19 blocked shots.
When an Ivy League program plays a team from a power conference, they are usually in over their head. That's not been the case in this rivalry, as Harvard has owned BC in recent years. With the way the Eagles are playing lately, that does not appear to be coming to an end any time soon.
