BOISE ST. BRONCOS

Boise St. Broncos

Boise St. Broncos VS. San Jose St. Spartans

San Jose State (2-16) at Boise State (12-6)

GAME NOTES: Owners of two separate eight-game losing streaks this season, the slumping San Jose State Spartans seek some measure of good news when they take on the Boise State Broncos in Mountain West Conference play at Taco Bell Arena.

SJSU head coach Dave Wojcik, who previously served as the associate head coach at Boise State under Leon Rice for three seasons before heading west, has been handed more than his fair share of misery this season. His Spartans have won a total of just two games, both coming against programs (Bethesda and St. Katherine) outside of the Division I ranks.

Since taking down St. Katherine by a score of 74-63 now more than a month ago, San Jose State has suffered eight straight defeats yet again. The most recent beating took place against Colorado State on Saturday in a 70-41 final at The Event Center. Needless to say, without a single victory in six tries against the rest of the MWC, the Spartans are in sole possession of last place in the conference standings entering the week.

Boise State, which is also found in the bottom half of the league standings at 2-3, was just in action on Sunday versus New Mexico at WisePies Arena. The team managed to come away with a convincing 69-59 win in the building, marking the second straight victory for the Broncos after losing four in a row.

The Broncos have dominated the relationship between these former Western Athletic Conference rivals, winning all but two of the previous 26 meetings. Boise State, which will visit the Spartans the first week of March, has never lost to SJSU at home in 13 opportunities.

Discouraging yet again, the Spartans began their meeting against Colorado State with a grand total of just four field goals in the first half over the weekend, eventually converting only 10-of-48 (.208) from the floor as they suffered the 29-point home loss. Rashad Muhammad, who hit a team-best three baskets, on 13 attempts, finished with 12 points, followed by Isaac Thornton with 11. Ivo Basor was held scoreless in 12 minutes of action and Darryl Gaynor II was responsible for a mere three points, hitting 1-of-9 shots, before fouling out.

On a team that is producing a meager 54.3 ppg, Muhammad is the top scorer with 12.7 ppg, thanks in large part to his 36.1 percent shooting behind the 3-point line. Jordan Baker (10.6 ppg) and Frank Rogers (10.4 ppg) are also listed as key contributors, but both are listed as being out of action due to disciplinary problems, leaving Jaleel Williams as the next-best offensive option with his 9.1 ppg for a group that is converting only 36.6 percent from the field and 28.0 percent out on the perimeter.

Few opponents are able to enter The Pit and come out on the other side with a victory, but that's exactly what the Broncos accomplished on Sunday evening thanks to the efforts of James Webb III who converted all seven of his 3-point tries and finished with 23 points for the visitors. Webb III, who added seven rebounds, shot a stellar 8-of-9 from the floor overall, his scoring output second only to Derrick Marks who delivered a game-high 31 points on 10-of-16 from the field and 10-of-11 shooting at the free-throw line.

In conference play the Broncos are having some issues on offense as they produce only 66.2 ppg, a mere 0.2 ppg ahead of the competition. Marks leads the way with 22.8 ppg as he converts 51.2 percent of his shot attempts, but the real breakout star is Webb III with his staggering 13-of-30 (.650) accuracy beyond the arc and 67.6 percent from the field, en route to 12.2 ppg, while also coming up with a team-best 9.4 rpg. Unfortunately, he is filling a void left by Anthony Drmic who will be out the rest of the season following surgery.

With the Spartans in complete disarray, even if they had the talent to compete against some of the teams in the MWC, they would still find a way in which to fumble away potential wins. Needless to say, Boise State should have little trouble in this meeting at home.

Predicted Outcome

Boise State 72, San Jose State 54
