BETHUNE-COOKMAN WILDCATS

Bethune-Cookman Wildcats

Bethune-Cookman Wildcats VS. Towson Tigers

Towson (2-1) vs. Bethune-Cookman (1-2)

GAME NOTES: With two consecutive wins under their belt, the Towson Tigers will look to make it three in a row as they take on the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats Saturday in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Multipurpose Activity Center.

Towson opened the season with a loss at Alabama, but followed that up with consecutive wins over Morgan State and, most recently, Central Connecticut State. The Tigers downed the Blue Devils, 58-49, in the first round of the Hall of Fame Classic.

Bethune-Cookman started the year off strong with a victory over Trinity College, but has since dropped games against Arizona State and Monmouth back- to-back. The Wildcats fell to the host Hawks, 73-50, Friday night in the opening round of the Hall of Fame Classic.

The two teams have met only once on the floor prior to this clash. The sides met in Orlando, Florida, back in 1974, which saw B-CU come away with a 90-72 victory.

Towson didn't feature a very strong offense against Central Connecticut State on Friday, as the Tigers hit just 37 percent of their field goal tries from the floor. But they didn't need an indestructible offense in the contest, considering CCSU came into the tournament with a notoriously poor offensive streak. That showed as Towson limited the Blue Devils to 49 points and 34 percent shooting in the game. Just A.J. Astroth registered a double-digit point total for Towson, netting 14 points with six rebounds. Timajh Parker- Rivera scored eight points with nine rebounds in the win.

It was an off game for Four McGlynn, who leads the team entering this contest with Bethune-Cookman at 11.3 ppg. McGlynn recorded only six points in the win over CCSU, but didn't need to be the go-to scorer in any case. He's the only Towson player averaging a double-digit scoring figure through three games played. The Tigers are likely missing Jerrelle Benimon and Rafael Guthrie, who provided some serious scoring last season. This year, the Tigers are averaging 54.3 ppg, but are still holding opponents to 59.0 ppg.

Bethune-Cookman didn't perform poorly against the host program Monmouth Hawks on Friday. The Wildcats made 43.2 percent of their shot tries in the contest, and hit 44.4 percent of their 3-point field goals in the game. But just wasn't enough, as the team fell behind by 13 points at halftime and then conceded another 10 points to Monmouth in the second half. Clemmye Owens was a bright spot though, as the Wildcats player netted a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Quentin Brewer was the only other B-CU player to net a double-digit scoring figure, adding 12 points before he fouled out of the competition.

Owens enters the game against Towson leading his team in scoring with a 16.7 ppg average. The guard is hitting an even 50 percent of his shot attempts from the field in three games played, and is shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range. Mikel Trapp, who could only score three points in the team's loss Friday, is second on the squad with an 11.3 ppg mark. Brewer is just shy of the double-digit scoring club, netting 9.7 ppg. But Brewer does lead the team in rebounding, bringing down 5.7 rpg in 35 minutes of floor time on average.

Towson needs to get it together offensively, or the CAA program won't be able to string much of anything together once the team hits conference play. This tournament could be a great turning point for the Tigers, considering no team is very strong offensively. Towson should be able to handle Bethune-Cookman's lackluster offense Saturday, especially if the team can limit Owens.
