Recap: Belmont vs. Wright State
Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - JT Yoho finished with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Wright State Raiders defeated the Belmont Bruins, 79-71, in a non-conference matchup at the Curb Events Center.
Michael Karena contributed 12 points in 12 minutes for Wright State (6-4), which has won two straight and three of its last four. Grant Benzinger added 11 points and six rebounds, while Joe Thomasson handed out a team-high six assists.
Spencer Turner paced Belmont (7-3) with 23 points after he connected on 7- of-13 attempts from beyond the arc. Reece Chamberlain tallied 18 points, seven boards and seven assists. Evan Bradds chimed in with 11 points for the Bruins, who closed out their three-game homestand with back-to-back losses.
Belmont took a 36-32 lead into halftime after it outrebounded the visitors, 17-12, and converted 10-of-13 tries at the charity stripe in the opening stanza. Belmont held a 27-18 lead with 4:25 left before the intermission, but WSU narrowed the gap with a 9-2 run. The Raiders trailed at the break despite shooting 48 percent from the floor and holding the Bruins to 44 percent efficiency from the field in the first half.
Turned knocked down a 3-point field goal try to tie the score at 69 with 2:54 remaining in regulation. Belmont was held without a make from the floor the rest of the way. WSU hit on 63 percent of its shots from the field and held an 18-11 advantage in total rebounds in the second period.
Both sides finished with 10 makes from behind the 3-point line, but Belmont attempted 27 shots from beyond the arc compared to just 15 by the Raiders. WSU also defeated the Bruins, 73-70, in its 2014-15 season opener at home on Nov. 14.
