Wright State (5-4) at Belmont (7-2)
GAME NOTES: The Belmont Bruins saw a seven-game win streak snapped in their last outing, but they'll look to rebound on Thursday as they host the Wright State Raiders in a non-conference clash at Curb Event Center.
Wright State brings a 5-4 overall record into this matchup against Belmont. The Raiders have won two of their last three games, with an 81-58 victory over Urbana serving as the most recent matchup.
Belmont is 7-2 this season. The Bruins lost the season opener against this very same Wright State squad, then dropped a narrow 65-62 decision to Evansville on Tuesday night to end a seven-game win streak.
Wright State owns a 5-1 all-time series advantage over Belmont, and this meeting will serve as the second in the 2014-15 campaign. Belmont's only win in the series came back in the 2005 season.
Right from the opening tip, Wright State showed it was the dominant team over Urabana. The Raiders led throughout the contest, and used a 45.5 shooting percentage from the floor to take a 12-point halftime lead that the squad would only build on in the second half. JT Yoho led Wright State with 23 points in the game, adding seven rebounds and a perfect 10-of-10 mark from the free-throw line. Joe Thomasson chipped in 1ith 20 points and eight assists, and Justin Mitchell netted 16 with eight boards. Grant Benzinger contributed 11 points in the one-sided victory.
Yoho missed time early in the season for Wright State, but in six games played so far he's shown he can be the difference maker on the offensive end. He enters the game against Belmont averaging 18.0 ppg with a 6.7 rpg mark, which also is a team best. But Thomasson has played in all nine games for the Raiders, and is just shy of Yoho's rebound average with 6.6 boards per outing. He adds in a 12.6 ppg mark, followed up by Chrishawn Hopkins' 12.1 ppg. As a unit, the Raiders head to Nashville averaging 69.6 ppg on 44.1 percent shooting, while allowing opponents to score 67.3 ppg.
Belmont looked good in the initial half against Evansville Tuesday, as the Bruins went into the intermission owning an eight-point lead. But the Purple Aces rallied in the second half behind 52.4 percent shooting, and used a 25- point effort from D.J. Balentine to bury the Bruins. Evan Bradds and Amanze Egekeze each netted 13 points to pace Belmont in the loss, while Nick Smith chipped in with 11 points and Spencer Turner added 10. Reece Chamberlain grabbed a team-best 14 rebounds in the game, and dished out eight assists as well.
Craig Bradshaw is the team's leading scorer, averaging 21.3 ppg this season on 51.8 percent shooting. But the guard missed the game against Evansville with a leg injury, and he is listed as questionable to play Thursday night. The Bruins could use his scoring, as the next closest point average belongs to Bradds, who nets 13.2 ppg. Taylor Barnette contributes 12.2 ppg to a Belmont squad averaging a healthy 76.1 ppg on 46.3 percent shooting from the field. Chamberlain tops the team in rebounding, bringing down 7.3 boards per outing.
If Bradshaw is cleared to play on Thursday night, watch out. The guard is an explosive scorer who will look to do everything he can to help the team rebound from a tough loss. Either way, the home advantage will boost Belmont's status in this revenge-seeking clash.
