Middle Tennessee (3-3) at Belmont (6-1)
GAME NOTES: Looking to extend a six-game winning streak, the Belmont Bruins will host the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in a non-conference affair at Curb Event Center Tuesday.
Middle Tennessee enters the clash with a 3-3 overall record this season, which includes losses in each of the team's last two games. The Blue Raiders were downed by Creighton, 57-47, on Saturday. Now the Raiders get set for a four- game road trip.
Belmont lost its season-opening contest to Wright State, 73-70, but the team hasn't dropped a game since then, winning six straight. The Bruins are coming off an 83-81 win over Ohio on the road, and get set for a three-game homestand now, that will culminate with a clash against Wright State again.
The two teams have met 34 times on the floor before in their series history, with Middle Tennessee holding the 20-14 advantage. The in-state rivals clashed last season as well, with Belmont earning a 70-58 victory.
Middle Tennessee struggled offensively out of the gate against Creighton, as the team made just 26.1 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half which led to a 36-15 halftime deficit. Although the Raiders shot 52.2 percent from the field in the second half, the team still finished the game with a 39.1 percent shooting mark. Jaqawn Raymond netted a team-best nine points in the loss to the Bluejays.
Not one player for Middle Tennessee has a scoring average in the double digits through six games this season. The Blue Raiders as a unit are scoring just 59.2 ppg, while their opponents are netting the exact same total. Reggie Upshaw leads Middle Tennessee with a 9.2 ppg average, followed by Jacquez Rozier's 9.0 ppg total. Upshaw also tops the squad with a 6.2 rpg mark.
Belmont held just a three-point lead over Ohio at the half of the team's most recent outing, and the Bobcats weren't about to roll over and die. The home squad made a bit of a comeback behind 48.5 percent shooting in the latter half, but still came up two points short to the Bruins. Belmont shot 50.9 percent from the floor in the game, and was paced by Craig Bradshaw's whopping 42 points. The guard connected on 14-of-22 shooting in the game, adding in 8- of-12 from 3-point range. Nick Smith tallied 15 points, and Evan Bradds contributed 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
The Bruins are looking just as solid as ever, even after losing J.J. Mann to graduation in the offseason. Bradshaw leads the team in scoring, raising his average to 22.3 ppg. Taylor Barnette checks in behind Bradshaw with 13.9 ppg, and Bradds is third at 13.0 ppg, adding in a team-best 6.7 rpg average. The Bruins this season are scoring 80.0 ppg through seven contests played, while holding opponents to just 69.9 ppg on 42.9 percent shooting from the floor.
Middle Tennessee and Belmont have an in-state rivalry going strong, but the Bruins have won the last two in a row over the Blue Raiders. If something doesn't change offensively for Middle Tennessee in this contest, the Bruins will shoot the daylights out of the Raiders.
