Wake Forest (2-0) at Arkansas (1-0)
GAME NOTES: The ACC will meet the SEC at Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday night, as the Arkansas Razorbacks play host to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest is off to a hot start to the season, having beaten UNC Asheville in its opener at home, 80-69, before heading on the road to take down Tulane on Monday, 71-49. The Demon Deacons' latest performance marked the first time they recorded a win of 20 or more points in a true road game in nearly five years.
Arkansas opened up its campaign on Sunday afternoon in a home game with Alabama State, coming away with a 97-79 win. The Razorbacks will try to extend their streak of home wins over unranked non-conference foes to 45.
Wake Forest holds a 4-2 lead in the all-time series with Arkansas, winning most recently in the 2001-02 season, 76-71.
Although the Deacons' 18-point first half lead over Tulane eventually dwindled to just five at halftime, it recovered in the second stanza by never giving up the advantage en route to the 22-point victory. They outshot the Green Wave from the field, 47.5 percent to 30 percent, and gained extra possessions by dominating the rebounding battle, 47-29. Devin Thomas was the spark plug, logging a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Codi Miller-McIntyre (12 points) was the only other player in double figures, but nine others contributed at least one field goal.
Wake Forest has been clicking at both ends of the floor during the young season, boasting a +16.5 scoring margin and a +21.0 rebounding margin while outshooting its opponents from the field, 48.6 percent to 31.3 percent. Thomas (19.0 ppg, 12.5 rpg) figures to be an anchor down low all season, while Dinos Mitoglou (12.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and Miller-McIntyre (10.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg) are also off to strong starts.
The Razorbacks unexpectedly had their hands full with Alabama State in their opener, as they battled through 10 ties and 14 lead changes but pulled away late in the second half thanks to a 12-2 run and eventually settled in on an 18-point victory. Arkansas was red-hot from the field, making 56.7 percent of its shots, including 8-of-14 from 3-point range, and it was active in the passing lanes, forcing Alabama State into 23 turnovers.
Leading the charge was Bobby Portis with 24 points on 9-of-11 from the field. Anthlon Bell knocked down all four of his tries from beyond the arc on his way to 20 points, while Alandise Harris and Michael Qualls netted 13 apiece.
Wake Forest made a statement in its last game that it will be a tough road team this season, but Arkansas is one of the best home squads in the nation and should find a way to pull this one out down the stretch.
