Ark.-Little Rock Trojans VS. Cal. St.-Northridge Matadors

Cal State Northridge (2-2) at Arkansas-Little Rock (2-1)

GAME NOTES: Regional action of the Maui Invitational wraps up at the Jack Stephens Center on Sunday afternoon, as the Cal State Northridge Matadors go up against the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans.

The host Trojans are coming off a 73-68 victory against the UMKC Kangaroos on Saturday afternoon, the team's second win in the first three games of the season.

Meanwhile, the Matadors are an even 2-2, winning two straight after bowing to national powers San Diego State (79-58) and Arizona (86-68). The latest outing for CSUN resulted in a 79-72 victory over Samford on Saturday.

This is the first-ever meeting between the programs.

The Matadors erupted for 61.4 percent shooting from the floor in yesterday's meeting with Samford, making it a little easier for CSUN to overcome 17 turnovers. The team also made good on 22-of-29 at the free-throw line, outscoring the Bulldogs by 12 at the charity stripe.

Stephen Maxwell scored a game-high 24 points as he shot not only 8-of-11 from the floor but also 8-of-9 at the free-throw line. Stephan Hicks came up two rebounds shy of a double-double as he delivered 22 points, while Landon Drew contributed 12 points and nine assists and three steals.

Maxwell, a starter in all four games, is shooting the ball at a 56.0 percent clip and is scoring a team-best 18.2 ppg at the moment, just ahead of Hicks with his 16.2 ppg. The team is scoring an average of 6.3 ppg less than the competition due partly to the fact that those other programs are hitting almost nine triples per contest, compared to 2.2 for the Matadors.

James White scored a game-high 17 points as he helped guide the Trojans to the five-point win over the UNKC Kangaroos yesterday afternoon. White, who shot 7- of-14 from the floor, added seven rebounds and four blocked shots for the Trojans as well. Josh Hagins tacked on 11 points and Ben Dillard 10 more for UALR. The Trojans outscored the 'Roos 19-9 at the charity stripe, helping the home team to overcome a massive 21 turnovers.

White and James Woods are leading the Trojans in scoring with 11.3 ppg each, the latter clearing 8.7 rpg to pace the squad and the former placing second in that department with 7.7 rpg.

To this point, the Trojans have benefited from the competition shooting a meager 51.9 percent at the free-throw line, something that will not continue much longer and could be turned around today if the Matadors focus their efforts.
