Pepperdine (5-1) at Arizona State (5-3)
GAME NOTES: The Arizona State Sun Devils look to extend their homecourt winning streak on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Pepperdine to Wells Fargo Arena for a non-league matchup.
Arizona State is coming off a 72-71 loss at Texas A&M last Saturday. However, the Sun Devils have won 13 in a row and 21 of their last 22 overall at home. Their three losses this season have been by a combined 11 points.
Pepperdine is off to its best start since the 2004-05 season, with the Waves' only loss so far coming on the road at Iowa, a 2014 NCAA Tournament team. The Waves took a break for final exams this week after winning at Cal State Fullerton last Saturday, 74-62. Next week, they will take part of the Gotham Classic with three games in Malibu.
Pepperdine leads the all-time series with ASU, 11-7.
After jumping out to an 11-point halftime lead at Fullerton, the Waves had to fend off the Titans while key players Stacy Davis and Jett Raines sat the bench for much of the second half due to foul trouble. Atif Russell picked up his play with a team-high 18 points, while Shawn Olden scored 11 of his 13 points after halftime. Davis and Raines finished with only 17 points between them. As a team, the Waves were efficient from the perimeter (9-of-18) for the second straight game but shot just 44.6 percent from the field and made only 13-of-21 free throws over the final 20 minutes.
Looking ahead to this matchup, Pepperdine will no doubt want to try and get Davis into the flow of the game early. The preseason All-WCC forward is averaging team-highs of 14.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per tilt.
Opponents are shooting just 38.3 percent from the field and scoring only 59.6 points per game against the Sun Devils during their 13-game home win streak. And like Saturday's opponent, ASU can shoot the three, having made at least seven in each game this season. However, the Sun Devils have also turned the ball over more times than their opponent in all but one game. Gerry Blakes (12.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and Eric Jacobsen (11.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg) take care of business down low, while Jonathan Gilling (11.0 ppg) has provided a spark off the bench by making 21-of-35 3-pointers (.600).
The Sun Devils knocked down 12 threes (.414) and shot a healthy 53.2 percent from the floor at Texas A&M, but they also turned the ball over 17 times while forcing only eight, as the Aggies shot 50.9 percent for the game. None of ASU's starters reached double figures but three reserves did, led by Tra Holder's 14 points and five assists. Jonathan Gilling and Bo Barnes each scored 12 in the loss.
Given both teams' propensity to shoot the three, the winner of this one will likely come down to whoever defends the perimeter best.
