St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – The New York Yankees have placed infielder/outfielder Martin Prado on the 60-day disabled list after he underwent an emergency appendectomy.

Prado was acquired from Arizona at the July 31 trade deadline and helped keep a struggling Yankees offense alive for most of August and early September. He was slowed by a hamstring injury earlier this month.

After hitting a mere five home runs with 42 RBI and a .270 batting average in 106 games for the Diamondbacks, he belted seven homers and drove in 16 runs with a .316 average in 37 games for the Yankees.

Prado played in Monday’s 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay and had two of the club’s six hits.

The Yankees selected the contract of infielder Jose Pirela from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the roster spot.
