Yankees’ Headley hit in chin by pitch
Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – New York Yankees third baseman Chase Headley was struck in the chin by a pitch during Thursday night’s game against Tampa Bay and was being sent for X-rays on his jaw.
Headley, batting as the designated hitter, took a fastball on his chin from Rays closer Jake McGee leading off the ninth inning but walked off the field with the help of trainers.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Headley wouldn’t travel to Baltimore with the team right away because he wanted him to have X-rays. He said Headley had seam marks and some bleeding on his chin but didn’t think he would need stitches.
“He never lost consciousness as far as I saw and seemed as good as you can getting hit with a 98 mile-per-hour fastball,” Girardi said.
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was hit on the left elbow by a pitch during the game but Girardi said his X-rays were negative. Jeter wears protective padding on the elbow.
Chris Young hit a walk-off three-run homer in the ninth to give the Yankees a 5-4 win after breaking up Alex Cobb’s no-hit bid in the eighth inning.
