Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) – Wise Dan, the reigning two-time Horse of the Year, will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after undergoing small intestine surgery.

Trainer Charles LoPresti said Friday that the 7-year-old gelding had surgery to repair a part of the small intestine that became twisted. The procedure was performed at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.

The problem was discovered after the champion thoroughbred galloped Friday morning at Keeneland. LoPresti believes Wise Dan will miss six to eight weeks but should be able to return to racing.

Wise Dan, owned by Morton Fink, has won both starts this year in an attempt to claim a third straight Horse of the Year honor. The 7-year-old won his second straight Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day and began his 2014 season with a second straight win in the Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland.

Wise Dan, winner of the last two Breeders’ Cup Miles, has career earnings of $6,802,920 with 21 wins in 29 starts.
