U.S. women beat Australia to reach worlds final
Istanbul, Turkey (SportsNetwork.com) – Tina Charles had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the United States past Australia, 82-70, on Saturday in the semifinals of the women’s world championship.
Maya Moore added 16 points for the Americans, who will face Spain in the gold- medal game Sunday. Spain took down host Turkey by a 66-56 margin to secure its first-ever trip to the championship game.
Holding a 24-22 lead with less than six minutes left in the first half, the United States went on a 10-1 run. Charles scored six points during the surge to help Team USA take a 34-23 edge. They went into the half up 42-30.
Australia stayed within striking distance in the third quarter and trailed 61-52 heading to the fourth.
Erin Phillips started the final period with a 3-pointer to make it a six-point contest. But the Americans responded with a 15-2 run to put the game away.
