U.S. Open champs to get event-record $3 million
White Plains, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – This year’s U.S. Open singles champions will enjoy a windfall of $3 million apiece.
The United States Tennis Association also announced that total prize money for the Grand Slam tournament will be $38.3 million, an increase of 11.7 percent from $34.3 million a year ago.
Last year’s Open champs — Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams — pocketed $2.6 million apiece.
A first-round singles loser in Flushing Meadows will earn $35,750, an increase of $3,750.
Last week’s Wimbledon champs — Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova — each collected $3.019 million.
The 2014 U.S. Open will commence Aug. 25.
