Top 10 in the ‘Road to the Kentucky Derby’
Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) – International Star, trained by Mike Maker, scored his first dirt victory last Saturday in Fair Grounds’ Lecomte Stakes and picked up 10 points to draw even with El Kabeir on the lead in the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” points system.
The Lecomte is Fair Grounds first of three stakes in the Derby points system which determines the 20-horse starting field for the Run for the Roses on Saturday, May 2. The Risen Star is Feb. 21 and Louisiana Derby March 28.
“He’s been training very well,” Maker said. “We expected a big race – maybe not that big – but he was coming into the race great. We’ll bring him back to Florida and take a hard look at the Risen Star.”
El Kabeir and International Star each have 21 points followed by Carpe Diem (14), Calculator (14), Texas Red (12), Mr. Z (12), Far Right (12), Ocho Ocho Ocho (10), American Pharoah (10), Daredevil (10), Dortmund (10), Leave the Light On (10) and Lucky Player (10).
Gulfstream Park has the Holy Bull Stakes on Saturday as the only points-worthy stakes this week.
