The Monkees Are Coming to a Town Near You
“Here we come, walking down the street, we get the funniest looks from….” There’s a very good chance you can finish the rest of the song without any further prompting. In fact, the song is probably already looping in your head – and it might just be there the rest of the day. You know and love the songs of The Monkees, even if you might not realize it yet. They have some of the most popular songs in the history of pop rock music, in part due to the talent of the musicians who fronted the group, in part to the success of their television show, and in no small part to the quality of the songs.
They were fun, catchy, and extremely well written. Some of the songwriters behind many of the hits include Neil Diamond, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, and Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The band members – Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith, and Davy Jones – wrote some of their own later songs. How many songs from The Monkees do you know? Some of the songs you are sure to know and remember include “I’m a Believer”, “Pleasant Valley Sunday”, “Last Train to Clarksville”, “Daydream Believer”, and “(I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone”. This is just the beginning of their catalog though. When you see the band on tour, you get to hear all of their gems.
Of course, everyone knows the group got their start from the television shows The Monkees. The songs they recorded were the soundtrack of the show, which then went on to become singles. It was a great marketing move. More than that though, it was great music, and they are one of the few groups from the 60s and 70s that retains such a large collective of fans and followers.
The group has gone through many breakups and tribulations over the years. The most recent blow was the passing of Davy Jones, who died from a heart attack in early 2012. The rest of the band is together though, and they are touring again. If you are in an area where they are playing, you really should go and see them live. The family friendly concert is well worth the cost of the tickets.
