Take Charge Brandi begins season in Martha Washington Stakes
Hot Springs, AR (SportsNetwork.com) – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Take Charge Brandi will begin her 3-year-old season in Saturday’s Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
Owned by Willis Horton and trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Take Charge Brandi will be ridden for the first time by Jon Court and break from post 6 in the seven- horse field of 3-year-old fillies.
“I think the mile is a logical choice,” the Hall of Fame trainer earlier said, referring to the Martha Washington distance.
Take Charge Brandi broke her maiden in her debut at Churchill Downs last June. She was second at Saratoga in the Schuylerville and fifth in the Adirondack Stakes. The filly followed with a fifth in the Pocahontas at Churchill and was eighth in Keeneland’s Alcibiades. She won the Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita as a 61-1 longshot.
The filly finished her Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old season by taking the Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos on Dec. 13. That victory came just three weeks after capturing the Delta Downs Princess Stakes on Nov. 22. The filly has won four of eight starts for $1,620,126.
Lukas has Take Charge Brandi pointed toward the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill on Friday, May 1.
Here is the field for the Martha Washington in post position order: Perfect Fit, Cliff Berry; Cape Town Stevie, Emmanuel Esquivel; High Dollar Woman, Joe Rocco Jr.; Indian Annie, Ricardo Santana Jr.; Sarah Sis, Julio Felix; Take Charge Brandi, Jon Court and Sweet Corinna, Channing Hill.
Post time for the Martha Washington will be approximately 5:38 p.m. ET.
