Serena withdraws from upcoming Qatar Open

St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – World No. 1 Serena Williams has withdrawn from the upcoming Qatar Open with a back injury.

Williams, last year’s Qatar runner-up, sustained the injury at the Australian Open, where she was dealt a surprising fourth-round setback at the hands of Serbian Ana Ivanovic.

The next Grand Slam on the schedule is the French Open in May, giving the 17- time Grand Slam winner plenty of time to rest her balky back.

The 2014 Qatar Open is slated to be played from Feb. 10-16 in Doha.
