France stuns Spain in FIBA World Cup quarterfinals
Madrid, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) – France used a big fourth quarter to stun Spain, 65-52, in the quarterfinals of the FIBA World Cup on Wednesday.
Boris Diaw scored 15 points for France, which outscored Spain by a 23-9 margin in the final stanza. Thomas Heurtel added 13 points.
France will meet Serbia in the semifinals on Friday after the Serbians defeated Brazil, 84-56, earlier Wednesday.
Pau Gasol ended with 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Spain, which went 2-for-22 on three-pointers in the loss. Juan Carlos Navarro tallied 10 points.
Milos Teodosic scored 23 points to lead Serbia over Brazil. Bojan Bogdanovic added 12 points and six rebounds for the victors.
Leading by just five, 37-32, after the first half, Serbia put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Serbia shot 10-of-14 from the field in the deciding frame, outscoring Brazil 29-12.
Anderson Varejao scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Brazil, which never made it a game in the final stanza.
The United States will play Lithuania in the other semifinal on Thursday.
