San Antonio not likely for Bayern
Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Bayern is unlikely to start in next week’s $500,000 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita.
Trainer Bob Baffert confirmed that the 4-year-old colt is not ready to begin his 4-year-old campaign after suffering from an abscess on a hind foot.
“I had to get a work into him last week (but didn’t),” Baffert said. “Right now it’s pretty doubtful he’s going to make the race. I don’t want to rush him into it.
“He looks good now, but you can’t run against those horses unless you’re at least 90 percent.”
Bayern, owned by Kaleem Shah, would have taken on Horse of the Year California Chrome and 2013 Eclipse Award winner Shared Belief in the 1 1/8- mile San Antonio.
Bayern won the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita and earlier captured the Woody Stephens Stakes, Haskell Invitational and Pennsylvania Derby, The colt has earned $4,389,680 with six wins from 10 career races, all in 2014.
