R+L Carriers New Orleans and MAACO Las Vegas College Bowl Previews

This week’s bowl games are the type that have many scoffing at the entire bowl season (with the exception of that one big one at the end, of course.) But there are two games lined up this weekend, and both will be exciting to watch. In New Orleans there will be a high-scoring game with two great offensive teams on each side; while in Las Vegas, it’s a powerful offense versus a team with an impenetrable defense. Now who wouldn’t want to watch these?

East Carolina Pirates vs. Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns

The Pirates finished regular season ranking 35th in the country, and they have their offensive line to thank for it. Sophomore QB Shane Carden has 21 TDs this year so far, and averages 279 yards a game. With the help of running back Vintavious Cooper, East Carolina may be able to pull this one out — but first they’ll need to stop the Ragin’ Cajuns.

That will be hard to do. QB Terrance Broadway and RB Alonzo Miller may not be the best known games in college ball, but they’re big ones for the Cajuns; and this game may just be resting on their shoulders. Miller’s expected to have his best showing of the year, and Broadway has the advantage of being a QB who’s great at both throwing and running the ball.

This one’s a tough call, but the Pirates get pick as Lafayette is 8-2 when facing teams who have winning records.

Washington Huskies vs. Boise State Broncos

This is the third year in a row Boise State heads to the MAACO bowl, and it’s the third year they’re looking for a win. In order to get it they’re going to have to play their greatest game of the year, as this year they face a very tough opponent at the bowl. Boise State is known for forcing an incredible number of turnovers, but that’s about all they have on Washington; and the Huskies are known for not giving the ball away. Washington is also known for allowing opponents to score only 50 per cent of the time when in the red zone, and Boise State hasn’t done as well inside that zone this year, ranking 77th in the country. The Broncos are the favorites here, but unless running back D.J. Harper has the game of his life, we think Washington will take it.
