The season’s home opener is upon the city of St. Louis, and everyone’s preparing for the huge annual celebration that comes to this place only once a year. But the baseball excitement is even more pumped up this year, as the Cardinals get set to take on one of their most heated and long-standing rivals, the Cincinnati Reds.

It all starts today, when the Cardinals will host the Reds, after of course, all of the annual celebrations and traditions. Those include a full motorcade that will bring the team and most notable Hall of Famers to home plate before the game, and this year, a special tribute to Stan Musial. That tribute will include the unveiling of a wall marker in the outfield; and is a special bonus for fans of the city after the harmonica fan giveaway tribute that was held for Musial on Friday.

But once the celebrations are done, it’s down to business for the Cardinals as they take on one of their most infamous rivals. This year they have a pretty good shot at defeating their opponents, with Jaime Garcia being dangerous to any batter that faces him on the mound. Not to mention the fact that Garcia plays especially well when playing at home. And the team has a particularly good record for beating the Reds when playing them on home turf, beating them the last six meetings.

But both teams are playing very well right now, and it’s too soon to say who will ultimately walk away the winners of this series. The Cardinals were on the road for their season opener and returned home 3-3, just one game behind their rival Reds in the National League Central. The Reds on the other hand, took two out of their three games in their opening series against the Los Angeles Angels.
