Reds’ Bailey headed for forearm surgery

Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) – Cincinnati Reds pitcher Homer Bailey will undergo surgery Friday to repair a torn tendon in his right forearm, the team has announced.

Bailey had already been ruled out for the remainder of 2014 due to what the Reds initially described as a flexor mass strain in his throwing elbow. He has been sidelined since August 7 with the injury.

It is unclear if Bailey, who signed a six-year, $105 million extension with Cincinnati in February, will be ready to pitch when the 2015 season begins. Former teammate Jonathan Broxton had the same surgery in August of 2013 and missed a portion of spring training before returning to game action on April 8.

Bailey, who threw a pair of no-hitters over a nine-month span overlapping the 2012 and 2013 seasons, has been limited to just 23 starts this year. The 28- year-old went 9-5 with a 3.71 earned run average.
