Rays shelve Peralta due to virus
St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) – An illness that Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Joel Peralta sustained during the All-Star break has landed the veteran reliever on the 15-day disabled list.
The Rays believe that Peralta, who did not pitch in the Rays’ three-game series against Minnesota this past weekend while battling a fever and joint pain, acquired the Chikungunya virus from a mosquito bite when he returned to his native Dominican Republic for the All-Star break.
Peralta is expected to be healthy once eligible to return from the DL, with Tampa Bay backdating the stint to July 13.
The durable right-hander owns a 2-3 record with a 4.15 earned run average in 43 appearances this season. Peralta has pitched in at least 71 games in each of the previous three campaigns.
Pitcher Jeff Beliveau was recalled from Triple-A Durham to fill the roster spot. The left-hander had a pair of scoreless one-inning outings with the Rays back in April.
