Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) – The Texas Rangers optioned catcher J.P. Arencibia to Triple-A Round Rock Tuesday and purchased the contract of backstop Chris Gimenez from the Express.

Arencibia signed with the Rangers in the offseason and started behind the plate on Opening Day, but batted just .133 with one home run and six RBI over 20 games with Texas.

Gimenez was also a member of the club’s Opening Day roster, but did not appear in a game with the Rangers before being designated for assignment on April 1.

He cleared waivers two days later and was granted free agency before re- signing a minor league deal with the Rangers on April 10.

The 31-year-old utilityman batted .259 with four homers and 16 RBI over 31 games at Round Rock. In 143 career major league games, Gimenez has batted .199 with six homers and 30 RBI.

The Rangers also transferred pitcher Martin Perez from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL on Tuesday.

Perez underwent Tommy John surgery Monday to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. The surgery went as planned and is expected to sideline the 23-year-old southpaw for a year.
