Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) – Boston Red Sox second baseman is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left hand on Thursday that will sideline him for the remainder of this season.

Red Sox manager John Farrell announced the news following Boston’s 10-6 loss to Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon. The team is optimistic that Pedroia will be ready for spring training.

Pedroia has battled pain in his left wrist throughout this campaign, with the injury having resulted in the four-time All-Star’s worst offensive numbers in a full season.

The 31-year-old has hit just .278 with seven home runs and 53 RBI over 135 games in 2014. Pedroia is a .299 lifetime hitter who has finished over .300 in four of the previous seven seasons.
