Oracle Team USA completes comeback, retains America’s Cup
San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) – What a difference a week made for Oracle Team USA.
Long on the brink of having the America’s Cup wrested from its grasp, Oracle Team USA won Race 19 on Wednesday — its eighth straight win — to retain the trophy.
The Americans captured the winner-take-all decisive race by 44 seconds over Emirates Team New Zealand, completing an incredible comeback in which they had to win 11 races instead of nine because of a two-point penalty incurred before the event started.
The Kiwis led the first-to-9 regatta by an 8-1 margin after capturing Race 11 a week ago but were unable to get their ninth win.
In 2010, Oracle Team USA defeated the Swiss team Alinghi to become the first American winner since 1992.
