NCAA College Football Recap: Week 9
Mississippi State has their undefeated streak taken away by Alabama, and the Florida Gators fall to Georgia. Meanwhile in Oklahoma, the Fighting Irish become just the second team to beat the Sooners at home under the coaching of Bob Stoops. All of that and more in this week’s college ball recap!
(1) Alabama 38, (13) Mississippi State 7
Mississippi State was an undefeated team coming into this game on Saturday, but you’d never know it by the way these two teams performed. The Crimson Tide forced three turnovers on the Bulldogs, and held LaDarius Perkins to just 38 rushing yards, taking away just about any chance Mississippi State held on offense. Alabama’s offense though was outstanding, and no match for the Bulldogs defense. A.J. McCarron, starting quarterback for Alabama, went another game without an interception (his eighth straight,) and threw for 208 yards.
(5) Notre Dame 30, (8) Oklahoma 13
Unlike Mississippi State, the Fighting Irish get to hold onto their undefeated season after beating Oklahoma on Saturday. They did it in style too, holding Oklahoma’s offense to just 15 yards on 24 attempts; and quarterback Everett Golson coming back from a concussion in fine form, throwing 177 yards and scoring the touchdown to win the game for Notre Dame in the last quarter. This one was a history-maker as well, as Notre Dame is now the only team with four wins over ranked teams; and is was only the second time in 35 games that Oklahoma scored 17 points or less in a game.
(12) Georgia 17, (3) Florida 9
While everyone may have thought that the game in Oklahoma was the one to watch this weekend, this game in Jacksonville turned out to be the one not to miss. The Gators were on fire before this game on Saturday, and looked to face a fairly easy opponent, even though Georgia still made the Top 25. But if Florida needed a reminder that they were still a beatable team, Georgia gave it to them. They were able to hold the Gators to just 266 yards, and they forced an astonishing six turnovers along the way. The Bulldogs got almost as good as they gave, with the Florida defense holding them to 273 yards, and picking off Aaron Murray three times. Still, offense was what won this game, and on Saturday, it was mostly seen on Georgia’s side of the ball.
