NCAA College Football Recap: Week 5

For a weekend that didn’t have a whole to look at on the schedule, it turned out to be a pretty good one after all. There were explosions of offense on just about every field, and Ohio State’s dynamic defense helped them take the win in the Big Ten opener. That and more, in this week’s college ball recap!

(9) West Virginia 70, (25) Baylor 63
Geno Smith led his team to victory, and he did it in fine fashion. His touchdown passes totalled 8 for just the one game — more interceptions than he’s had all year. And that’s not hard, considering he hasn’t seen one yet. Five of those passes counted as touchdowns, and his yardage was greater than RG3’s last year at 581 yards. Sure winning a football game is a team effort. But this one was all Smith.

(14) Ohio State 17, (20) Michigan State 16
This was the Big Ten opener and boy, was it a doozy! In a weekend that seemed to be all about offense, these two teams proved that there’s something to be said for defense, too. Despite repeatedly getting banged up and thrashed around on the field, Braxton Miller kept at it, and came back every time. Whether it was to take more punishment or to dole it was hard to say at times; but he threw for 179 yards and ran for 136. Michigan State did their best to hold them off, even taking a lead of 13 — 10 in the third. But it wasn’t enough, and Ohio State just barely took this highly-anticipated game.

(5) Georgia 51, Tennessee 44
This turned out to be an impressive showing on both sides, and it was all about the offense. Still, Georgia was able to show up when they needed defensive plays, too. Sanders Commings intercepted one of Tyler Bray’s passes, and then Bray moved on to fumble the ball. That was picked up by John Jenkins for Georgia, before Commings came on and intercepted Bray again. Georgia has been a hot team this year, and with games like this we can expect to continue to see a lot more of them.
