NCAA College Football Recap Week #1
It was the first week of college ball and while some things never change, some things just can’t stay the same. Here’s the best and the worst of what we saw.
Oklahoma State vs. Savannah State
Whether or not this was a good game or a bad one depends on what team what you were cheering for. And if you like to watch blowouts by teams that have virtually no competition. Oklahoma State owned this game from the minute they stepped onto the field, scoring on their first five possessions and holding a lead of 35-0 in the first quarter. The final score was 84-0. Not surprising since Savannah State only has two wins in the last two years; but Oklahoma State did actually try to back off a bit. They pulled most of their starters, including quarterback Wes Lunt before the end of the first quarter.
Hawaii Warriors vs. USC
Not quite the blowout put on by Oklahoma State, but still not a good showing on the part of Hawaii. With a final score of 49 -10 for USC, the most exciting thing to watch here was Matt Barkley, who threw for 372 yards and scored four touchdowns for USC. Expect his name to come up a lot this year, especially when it comes to contention for the Heisman Trophy.
Ohio vs. Penn State
Joe Paterno’s widow and daughter attended the Nittany Lions’ game on Saturday, arriving only to see what the program had become since being practically decimated by the sanctions handed down by the NCAA. In a game that ended in 24-14 victory for Ohio, Penn State didn’t appear half bad early in the game. By halftime, Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin helped his team hold a 14-3 lead, but when they came back for the second half things quickly fell apart. Despite the t-shirts in the stands reading “We’re still Penn State,” it’s clear that they are not. And that it will most likely be years before they’re even close to achieving what they once could.
