NCAA College Football Preview: Week 5

We’re not going to lie to you. This week in college football isn’t looking good. It’s a lot of unranked teams stacked up against unranked teams; and virtually no big news to speak of. But perhaps the college ball this weekend has been left so bland so that the huge games of the week could really shine. There aren’t a lot of them, but we’ve rounded up the three games that are probably going to be the only ones worth watching.

(14) Ohio State at (20) Michigan State
This Big Ten opener is the game to watch this weekend, and it doesn’t hurt that it’s the two top-ranked teams within the conference that are playing. Michigan State is coming off a win over Eastern Michigan last week and Ohio State beat UAB. But neither opponent for either team was very tough, and both teams are going to face their first challenge of the season when they play against each other on Saturday.

(25) Baylor at (9) West Virginia
It will be all about the offense at this game in West Virginia on Saturday. Baylor QB Nick Florence holds the lead in the country for total yardage, and he hasn’t disappointed his Bears yet this season. Baylor has also forced turnovers in their last 16 games, while West Virginia hasn’t given up one this year. But while the offense from both sides are certainly going to put on a show, it’s the defense that’s really going to make the difference. Both teams suffer in this area, with West Virginia having the 103rd defense in the country and Baylor holds the 113th position. One of them will have to be better on Saturday; and it will most likely be that team that wins.

(4) Florida State at South Florida
This may only be a big game for you if you know people attending the different schools. Still, with so little to pick from this weekend there are some storylines here you may want to keep an eye on. Florida State’s QB EJ Manuel is going to be a Heisman contender and last week he passed for 380yards and rushed for 102 yards when playing Clemson. This kid’s on fire when he hits the field and no matter who the Seminoles are up against, it’s a fun thing to watch. Also, TB James Wilder Jr. is also going to be highly featured in this game, as he’s from the area and bound to have lots of hometown fans in the stands. On the side of South Florida though, just look to see how a team tries to improve. That’s all they’re going to be doing during this game.
