NBA Season in Jeopardy as Union Talks Stop

Things were looking so good. Earlier this month, NBA owners and the union were sitting down, talking and, it looked like, trying to get a season going. But now, all of that has stopped and the two sides remain at a standstill.

Both NBA execs and the Players’ Association sat down on Tuesday to try and come to some sort of agreement. The very fact that they were talking to each other seemed to bode well for the NBA season this year, as it had taken them months to even come that far. But with every step forward, they seem to take two steps back. And all that seems to have come from yesterday’s meeting was hostile feelings and negative predictions.

The biggest sticking point in negotiations seems to be that the NBA wants to impose a hard salary cap — a cap that would force all teams to stay under a certain salary point. The players however, want the soft salary cap to remain in place. With this cap, the salaries of the players already under contract with teams are not to be included in the cap, with only new salary acquisitions being considered. The NBA thinks that a hard cap is necessary to keep an even playing field throughout the NBA. The players think that they should be able to make what they make, and who cares if that ends up in some teams being stacked against others?

Coming out of yesterday’s meeting, the President of the Players’ Association, Derek Fisher, said, “I think coming out of today, obviously because of the calendar, we can’t come out of here feeling as though training camps and the season is going to start on time at this point.” With training camps having an October 3 start date, and the regular season being scheduled to start on November 1, it looks as though Fisher is probably right.
