Backlund’s well-placed wrister that landed under the glove of Corey Crawford, as well as a stellar performance between the pipes from Jonas Hiller, enabled the Flames to steal a game in which they were outshot by a 50-18 margin. Hiller came up with 49 saves in Calgary’s second road overtime triumph in as many nights, with Dennis Wideman recording a goal in the win. Chicago forced the extra session on Andrew Shaw’s power-play tally with 5:45 left in regulation. Crawford came up with 16 saves in the loss, the Blackhawks’ first after a 2-0-0 start to the young season.

Martin Erat had a goal and an assist, while Kyle Chipchura, Connor Murphy and Rob Klinkhammer each deposited a goal in the win. Mike Smith, who entered the game 8-0-1 in his last 10 starts against Edmonton, stopped 23-of-27 shots for Arizona. The Coyotes look to close out their season-opening four-game homestand with a win against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. Taylor Hall netted two goals with an assist for Edmonton, which has allowed 23 goals in opening the season with four straight losses. Ben Scrivens allowed six goals on 28 shots in the setback.
