Riley Sheahan also tallied and Jonas Gustavsson halted 30 pucks for the Red Wings, winners of two in a row and three of four. Final Score: Colorado 3, Florida 2

Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Semyon Varlamov made 34 saves, including 18 in the third period, to help the Colorado Avalanche fend off the Florida Panthers, 3-2, BB&T Center. The Avalanche were very sloppy after building a 3-0 lead, while the Panthers were relentless and continuously peppered Varlamov. However, the comeback bid fell short. Florida outshot Colorado 20-6 in the final frame and Scottie Upshall lit the lamp twice. His second goal on a deflection came with 1:43 remaining and Panthers goaltender Tim Thomas on the bench for an extra skater. Ryan O’Reilly had a goal — his career-high 19th of the season — and an assist for an Avalanche team that welcomed forward Alex Tanguay back to the lineup after he missed 36 games with knee and hip injuries. Colorado improved to 6-1-1 in its last eight games. Thomas finished with 22 saves for the Panthers, who were seeking a third straight win.

Final Score: Calgary 5, Nashville 4 (SO)

Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) – Eric Nystrom lit the lamp a career-high four times for the Nashville Predators, but the Calgary Flames scored two late goals and Sean Monahan registered the winner in an eventual 5-4 shootout victory. After each team failed to convert once in the shootout, Jiri Hudler quickly moved in on net and roofed a backhander over Devan Dubnyk before another set of shooters missed. Roman Josi prolonged the shootout after he moved right to left and faking Dubnyk to score through his five hole. Monahan went through the middle and slid the puck through the legs of Dubnyk before Ryan Ellis was stopped by Reto Berra to end the game. David Jones supplied two goals, while Mark Giordano and Mikael Backlund each added a power-play goal in Calgary’s second straight win. After Karri Ramo allowed three goals on 12 shots, Berra made 12 saves in relief for the win. Dubnyk stopped 27 shots for the Predators, who won four of five games entering the contest.

Final Score: Phoenix 4, Edmonton 3

Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) – The Phoenix Coyotes raced out to a sizeable lead, but had to fend off Edmonton’s spirited comeback bid to escape Rexall Place with a 4-3 win. The Coyotes scored three times in a 4:02 span in the first period and led 4-0 at the three-minute mark of the second. Mike Ribeiro had a goal and one assist for Phoenix, which snapped a five-game road losing streak. The Oilers have dropped six in a row.
