Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Recaps
Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) – Sterling Smith netted 14 points and pulled down six rebounds as the ninth-seeded Coppin State Eagles outlasted the eighth-seeded Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 64-60, in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at Norfolk Scope Arena.
Arnold Fripp contributed nine points and five boards for Coppin State (8-22), which advances to the quarterfinal round of the tournament to face top-seeded North Carolina Central Wednesday.
Ricky Johnson scored a game-high 21 points to lead Bethune-Cookman (11-21), which lost four of its last five games to end the season. Denzel Dulin added 16 points with seven rebounds, and Quintin Brewer chipped in 11 with seven boards and four blocked shots off the bench.
Bethune-Cookman’s MEAC title drought continues, while Coppin State advances to face last season’s conference champions.

Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) – Edward Stephens and Jalen White each netted 16 points to lead the seventh-seeded South Carolina State Bulldogs to a 63-54 victory over the 10th-seeded North Carolina A&T Aggies in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at Norfolk Score Arena.
Greg Mortimer added eight points, and Gabe McCray grabbed 10 rebounds for South Carolina State (11-21), which advances to the quarterfinal round of the MEAC Tournament to take on second-seeded Norfolk State Wednesday.
Bruce Beckford scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead North Carolina A&T (9-23), while Austin Williams contributed 11 points off the bench in the defeat. The Aggies dropped consecutive games to end their season.
South Carolina State outscored NC A&T from the free-throw line in the contest, 14-5, and shut down the program with the most conference titles (16) in league history.
