Martin Short Takes the Stage at NYCB Theatre

What’s better than watching some of your favorite Martin Short characters in movies such as Three Amigos, Father of the Bride, and Innerspace? Watching him take the form of those characters live on stage, which is just what the audience at the NYCB Theatre was treated to Saturday night.

At first it seemed as though it was just going to be the audience watching Short take on role after role, sing song after song, and deliver punch line after punch line. That would have been enough, and in fact, even if he only acted out the role of Franck Eggelhoffer from Father of the Bride, the audience would have been happy. But to make it even more lively and interactive, when it was time for the Three Amigos to appear, and there was only one on stage, Martin brought up two members from the audience to help him complete the skit.

Saving some of the most beloved characters for last, Martin wrapped up the evening by bringing back Ed Grimley, and then Jiminy Glick. While doing the Glick bit, Short called on help once again, using Long Island Cares’ Paule Pachter as an interview subject to help with the skit. Delivering a few jokes that seemed to signal the evening’s wrap-up, Short surprised everyone when Elisa DiStefano, Long Island entertainment news anchor, appeared, bringing him a glass of champagne.

After joining him on stage for even more jokes, Short really did wrap the night up, apologizing that he had to make his way to “Saturday Night Live,” the show that spring-boarded his career.
